Poetry is a creative form of expression which people have used for centuries. Poetry is not limited to rhyme but includes many different forms. Learning about the many types of poetry can be exciting. This webquest will involve you in a poetic adventure! You will visit a new world of poetry!
Do you like poetry? Before you answer, think of the words of your favorite song, the words you remember from the books you have read and enjoted, a famous quote from a person you admire, the way you feel when you visit your secret place, what you feel when you look at a photo of someone or some place you love, or the smell of a special meal. Are these things poetry? Yes!! Well, they can be! The first thing to remember about poetry is that it is all around you. Your favorite musical celebrities probably consider themselves poets! Poetry helps us express our thoughts, feelings, and ideas as we relate to the world around us. As we read the poetry of others, we understand who they are, what they think, and what we might have in common. Poetry is the "Great Communicator!" It can "talk to our heads and our hearts".
Poetry can be funny, sad, long, short, rhymed, or unrhymed. We call this the purpose, mood, and form of the poem. Poetry can be based on fantasy, your real life or any important event. This is called the theme of poetry. You will use purpose, form, mood, and theme in the activities that follow.
We hope you will enjoy our web site and visit it often as you learn about the poetry that surrounds you and uncover the poems already "written" in your heart.
Your task will be to explore and research various types of poetry. You will learn the components of different poetry forms as well as the history behind each form. Then you will read poems written by famous poets as well as from children around the world. Next, you will write poetry on your own for classroom publication. With a group, you will read a poem, decide the form of the poem, and give your opinion on what the poet was trying to express by writing the poem.
Working through sessions 1-20 and completing set tasks
You will be evaluated by the following:
1. Are all poems in your folder complete?
2. Are all poems in final draft form with correct spelling and punctuation?
3. Did you follow all directions for each specific type of poetry?
Once your folder is in final publication form (last week of term) it will be handed in. Then with your assigned group, you will be given a poem to read and analyze. Your analysis must include the type of poetry as well as a written explanation of what the poet is trying to express in the poem.
